AP English Literature and Composition
Summer Dystopian Reading
1. Read: The Road by Cormac McCarthy
Write a 1-page reflection that addresses the following prompt:
How does McCarthy use syntax and imagery to convey a message? How does that message connect to the notions of Dystopia, survival, and happiness?
2. Read: 1984 by George Orwell
Write 1-page reflection that addresses the following prompt:
How does Orwell use symbols to convey a message about individual morality and public conscience? What are your own thoughts about individual morality and public conscience?
*Both reflections are due in the first week of school, and you should be ready to participate in a Socratic Seminar Discussion about these 2 books on the first few weeks of school. My email is firstname.lastname@example.org. Feel free to email me over the summer if you have any questions or concerns.
*If you are looking for more Dystopian titles that are AP approved, and if you are wanting to read even more over the summer, check out the following books: The Martian, A Clockwork Orange, Player Piano, Fahrenheit 451, Lord of the Flies, and Anthem. We have copies of these in our school library. Multnomah County Library is also a great resource for these texts.
Have a fun time reading! See you in September!
